History

The name of Campanet comes from the late-Latin word "capanna" and the Arab plural "kapanät", which means a collections of huts. This name probable indicates that there has been a settlement in this place since prehistoric times.
The hamlet of Campanet, which, together with the present Ullaró farmstead, used to form part, in Arab times, of the Arab district of Inca. It was the site near where the Mediaeval town grew from. This town was sited on a dividing line between a series of hills, which gives the town an elongated image with streets running in parallel.

The ancient parish church was erected on the plain of Tel, probably on top of an older settlement. It is the present church of Sant Miquel, situated close to the caves. This church has been a parish church since 1248, when it is mentioned in the papal bull of Innocent IV, but in 1315, the title was transferred to Sa Pobla. However, it regained the title between 1368 and 1425, when the parish was moved to the present town, where another church had been built.

A similar situation was happening to the town. In 1300 Campanet belonged to Sa Pobla. After many petitions by the courts of Campanet, it became, in 1368, an independent municipality and parish as conceded by Pere el Ceremoniós, and it entailed the districts of Búger and Ullaró. The last change to the municipality occurred in 1823, when Búger became independent.

The present church was erected on the site of a previous one, and it was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Building began in 1717, when the rector was Miquel Martí Tamorer - whose grave is in the centre of the church, underneath the presbytery - and it was finished in 1774, after a few interruptions in the work.

Until the 1940's, the economy of the town was solely based on agriculture. In 1945, the shoe manufacturing industry had a boom year, producing 422,000 pairs of shoes destined for Mallorca, Cuba and the Army. It was the time of boom for the building industry, the tourist services in the area of Alcúdia and the service industries in Inca and Palma. Social life is very active and in summer the Main square is the centre of a lot of activities.

In the church, it is worth visiting the Sala Vella and the crosses. A stroll through the town will show samples of stately homes and of popular and traditional architecture. Such houses are: the inns of Massana (plaça Major, 7) - with two windows in Renaissance style - and of Biniatró (calle de Sant Miquel, 20), Can Ferrer Nou (cantó des Càrritx, 21), Can Muntaner (cantó des Càrritx, 27), Ca n'Arnavet (calle de la Creu, 34) amongst others. Also to be noted are the houses where the writer and humanist Llorenç Riber i Campins (calle Major, 27) lived, and the house where the writer and journalist Miquel dels Sants Oliver (calle de Miquel dels Sants Oliver, 14) was born, both of whom are illustrious children of the town.
