Mallorca Resident Discount: How to Apply for 75 % off Flights and Ferries
Anyone living permanently on Mallorca travels within Spain dramatically more cheaply than any tourist: the Mallorca resident discount gives you a 75 per cent reduction on flights and ferry connections between the Balearic Islands and the rest of Spanish territory. The discount applies to routes to the mainland, the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and between the Balearic Islands themselves. It is funded by the Spanish central government, which provides compensation for the structural disadvantage of island life. In this guide you will find out exactly who is eligible, which documents you need, how the booking process works in practice – and where mistakes repeatedly happen that can cost you the discount.

What is the resident discount – and who is behind it?
The 75 per cent reduction is not a concession from the airlines or ferry companies, but a state-subsidised programme. The costs are borne by the Spanish central government, which reimburses the providers. The reasoning behind it: anyone living on an island has no alternative to flying or taking a ferry if they want to reach the mainland. The enforced dependence on air and sea connections should not become a permanent financial burden – neither for Mallorca residents nor for inhabitants of the Canary Islands or other Spanish islands.
In principle, Spanish nationals, EU citizens, and third-country nationals are all eligible – each requiring a valid, permanent residence permit (Residencia). The crucial point, which we will go into in more detail below: a mere NIE number with a time limit, or a padrón registration alone, is not sufficient under the regulations.
Requirements: who is eligible?
To be able to use the resident discount, you must meet two conditions simultaneously:
| Requirement | Specific criteria |
|---|---|
| Residencia (green NIE card) | Registration in the Foreigners' Register (Registro Central de Extranjeros), permanent/indefinite |
| Empadronamiento | Municipal registration (padrón) at your place of residence on Mallorca |
Please note: A time-limited NIE number – such as the orange one issued for one-off transactions – does not confer entitlement. According to the Balearic travel agency association Aviba, certificates have been and continue to be issued in some cases to people who hold only a temporary NIE. This is not lawful and can result in the discount being cancelled during checks.
For EU citizens from Germany or Austria, the green Residencia card is the definitive proof of eligibility. Swiss nationals are considered EEA nationals and should check their specific status in advance. British nationals have been classified as third-country nationals since 2021 and require a formal residence permit – a valid, permanent authorisation is a prerequisite for the resident discount.
The Certificado de Viaje: The Key Document
The central document for the discount is called the Certificado de Viaje para Residentes. Without it, you won't be able to claim the discount at check-in – at least not where physical checks are carried out.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Issuing Authority | Your local Ayuntamiento (town hall/municipal office) |
| Cost | 0 to 3 Euro, depending on the municipality |
| Validity Period | 6 months from the date of issue |
| Language | Spanish |
| Format | Paper document or digital version |
The certificate should not be confused with proof of Empadronamiento, even though both are applied for at the town hall. It is a standalone document issued specifically for the travel discount.
How to Apply for the Certificado de Viaje
- Make sure your Empadronamiento is up to date. An outdated or expired registration will result in your application being rejected.
- Go to your Ayuntamiento (for a first-time application, attending in person is generally required).
- Bring the following: a valid national identity card or passport, plus your green Residencia card.
- Apply for the Certificado de Viaje – in many municipalities there is a straightforward form available at the municipal office counter (Padrón office).
- Pay the fee of up to 3 Euro and receive the document immediately or after a short wait.
- Make a note of the expiry date: The certificate is only valid for 6 months. Plan your trips so that you apply for a new one before it expires.
Note: In most municipalities on Mallorca, you can also download or digitally request the Certificado de Viaje online after your initial registration – provided you have a Certificado Digital (electronic certificate) or access to the Cl@ve system. However, for your first-time registration on the padrón, you must always appear in person.
Where and how does the discount apply? An overview of routes
The residents' discount applies not only to flights from Mallorca to Madrid or Barcelona. The complete route overview:
| Type of travel | Routes |
|---|---|
| Flight | Mallorca ↔ Spanish mainland (all destinations), Mallorca ↔ Canary Islands, Mallorca ↔ Ceuta, between the Balearic Islands |
| Ferry | Mallorca ↔ Barcelona, Valencia, Denia and other mainland ports; between the Balearic Islands |
International flights are not included – for example, Mallorca to Germany. Connecting flights outside Spain are also not covered by the discount. The subsidy mechanism applies exclusively to domestic connections between islands and Spanish territory.
How to book with the residents' discount
The booking process varies slightly depending on the provider, but always follows the same pattern:
- During the online booking process (Iberia, Vueling, Air Europa, Trasmediterránea, Baleàlia, etc.) there is a ticket category or a selection field for residents of the Balearic Islands – often labelled "Residente Islas Baleares" or similar.
- Select this category. The system calculates the price with a 75 % reduction.
- At check-in – whether at the desk or at the gate – you present three documents simultaneously:
- Passport or national identity card
- Green Residencia Card
- Certificado de Viaje (still valid!)
- No certificate, no discount. Anyone who cannot present a valid certificate at check-in will either have to pay the price difference or, in certain cases, will not receive their boarding pass.
Note: Some booking portals and travel agencies do not always display the resident category prominently. If you cannot find it, book directly through the airline's or ferry company's website.
Abuse and checks: what you need to know
The misuse of the resident discount is far from a niche issue on Mallorca. According to reports by Mallorca Magazin from May 2025, there is a growing number of cases in which foreigners are obtaining the discount unlawfully – partly because municipal offices have issued the Certificado de Viaje to individuals who hold only a temporary NIE number (not a Residencia). The industry association Aviba has repeatedly called on airlines and authorities to tighten controls.
For you as a legitimate resident, this has one practical consequence: Expect more thorough document checks at the gate or desk than in previous years. Make sure all three documents are complete, up to date and consistent with one another (same person, same address).
Relationship to other benefits for residents
The resident discount on flights and ferries is the best-known, but not the only financial benefit for Mallorca residents. For guidance:
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| 75 % flight & ferry discount | The subject of this article |
| Discounted public transport | Registered residents benefit from heavily reduced or free fares on buses and trains on Mallorca |
| Tax advantages | Balearic IRPF deductions, more favourable inheritance tax |
You can find more information about the tax benefits in the guide to Balearic IRPF deductions. Anyone who would like to approach their entire relocation in a structured way will find professional support for all official formalities in one place at the Relocation Service Mallorca.
Most common mistakes with the resident discount
These slip-ups happen regularly – and can all be avoided:
Expired Certificado de Viaje: The certificate is only valid for 6 months. Many residents book a trip without checking whether their certificate is still valid. Solution: note the expiry date in your calendar.
Only bringing the Padrón proof: The Empadronamiento alone is not a sufficient basis. You need the Certificado de Viaje as a standalone document.
Confusing a temporary NIE with a permanent one: Anyone who only holds a temporary NIE is not eligible. The green Residencia card is mandatory.
Wrong booking category: If you forget to select the resident category when booking, you will pay the full price. A subsequent correction can be difficult or chargeable depending on the airline.
Documents out of sync: Your passport, Residencia and certificate must all be issued to the same person and the same address. Any address changes in the padrón should be made promptly.
Third-country nationals with a temporary permit: Anyone living on Mallorca as a non-EU citizen on a temporary visa, for example, is not entitled to the discount — only a permanent Residencia opens the door to the discount.
What comes next? Steps after obtaining your first certificate
Once you have the Certificado de Viaje in hand, the ongoing effort is manageable. Nevertheless, there are a few points to keep in mind:
- Renew every 6 months — ideally two to three weeks before it expires, so you are never caught without a valid certificate when travelling at short notice.
- Set up digital access: Cl@ve PIN or a Spanish digital certificate allows you to order the certificate conveniently online in many municipalities.
- Report address changes: Every move requires an update to your Empadronamiento. If you fail to do so, problems may arise when renewing your certificate. You can find everything about the Empadronamiento on Mallorca in our guide.
- Check family members: Every family member needs their own Certificado de Viaje. Children who are also registered as residents are likewise entitled to claim the discount.
Checklist: applying for and using the resident discount
- Residencia (green NIE card) in place and valid
- Empadronamiento up to date with the relevant Ayuntamiento
- Certificado de Viaje applied for (in person or, where possible, online)
- Expiry date of the certificate noted (6 months)
- Category "Residente Islas Baleares" selected when booking
- All three documents ready for check-in: ID/passport + Residencia + Certificado de Viaje
- Cl@ve PIN or digital certificate set up for future online renewals
Conclusion
The Residentenrabatt Mallorca is one of the most tangible financial benefits of island life. Anyone who holds the green Residencia card and is registered in the Padrón can save three-quarters of the ticket price on travel within Spain – on every flight and every ferry connection to the mainland, to the Canary Islands, or between the Balearen. The bureaucratic effort is minimal: a certificate that costs up to 3 Euro, must be renewed every 6 months, and is already available digitally in many municipalities. Those who follow the rules – complete documentation, correct booking category, up-to-date registration – will find the process barely any trouble at all. The prerequisite is and remains the Residencia. Anyone who does not yet have one should prioritise this step before planning their first discounted trip.
