Description
Bar Can Joan Frau is a traditional Mallorcan tapas bar located inside the Santa Catalina Market Hall in the Ponent neighbourhood of Palma.
Authentic market cooking since 1966
Can Joan Frau has been serving homemade, traditional Mallorcan food since August 1966. It's a genuine local institution — there are regulars who have been coming here for breakfast or lunch since 1989. Everything on offer is freshly prepared and rooted firmly in Mallorcan culinary tradition.
What's on the plate
The star of the menu is the variado mallorquí, a small mixed platter that draws consistent praise. Also highly regarded are the salt cod, ribs, paella, frito mallorquín, squid, and — for something sweet to finish — the apricot coca. Portions are generous and represent excellent value. Popular daily dishes can sell out, so arriving early is well worth it.
Market atmosphere in Ponent
Situated within the market building on Plaça de la Navegació, the bar has a lively, no-frills feel that's unmistakably local. It's a proper market bar rather than a conventional restaurant, and seating is limited.
Service and character
The staff are friendly, attentive, and happy to talk you through the dishes. The service is brisk and efficient. Can Joan Frau draws both locals and visitors alike, and retains all the warmth of a family-run, long-standing neighbourhood staple.
