Description
The Basílica de Son Peretó is an early Christian archaeological site near Manacor in the east of Mallorca.
A Palaeochristian Ensemble
The site preserves the remains of a palaeochristian basilica dating from the 5th and 6th centuries AD. Visible features include the wall structures of the basilica itself, a baptistery with two baptismal fonts, and the remains of a necropolis and adjoining buildings. The baptismal fonts and the mosaic floors of the baptistery are particularly striking. Information panels throughout the site explain each area and help bring to life what once stood here.
Finding the Site
The site is located on the Carretera de Manacor a Sant Llorenç at kilometre 7.5, on the road towards Sant Llorenç. The approach from the main road follows a track and requires a little care; a small number of parking spaces are available directly at the entrance, including a paved disabled parking space.
Peace and History
The Basílica de Son Peretó welcomes visitors in a wonderfully quiet setting. If you have an interest in archaeology, late antiquity, or early Christianity, you'll find a well-documented and well-signposted site that also makes a great short stop on a drive around the region.
