Cala Esmeralda
Description
Cala Esmeralda is a small sandy cove in the south-east of Mallorca, in the Cala d'Or district of the municipality of Santanyí.
The Cove
Cala Esmeralda stretches roughly 50 metres wide and 150 metres long — a compact, sheltered bay with fine sand. The water is strikingly clear, shimmering in vivid turquoise and deep blue. Its calm, wave-free conditions make it a lovely spot for a swim. Rocky outcrops and cliffs around the cove are perfect for jumping into the water, and the shallows close to shore are great for snorkelling.
Location & Getting There
Cala Esmeralda is situated in the Cala d'Or (centre) district of Cala d'Or, in the municipality of Santanyí. Free parking is available nearby, including free on-street parking. Access to the beach is via a large staircase, which is possible with a buggy but quite challenging.
Crowds & When to Visit
Thanks to its proximity to several hotels, the cove gets a fair amount of footfall and can fill up quickly at busier times of day. If you're after a quieter experience, visiting outside peak season is the way to go — in December, for instance, the beach is practically deserted. That said, Cala Esmeralda does still draw a reasonable number of visitors in the shoulder season.
Facilities on Site
Sun loungers are available to hire on the beach. There is a café overlooking the cove, though it caters exclusively to adults. Toilets can be found within the adjoining hotel. Shaded spots are limited.
