Description
Can Alcover – Espai de Cultura is a literary café and cultural centre in the heart of Palma's old town, housed in the former manor of the poet Joan Alcover.
House, Museum, Meeting Place
The building on Carrer de Sant Alonso is the former home of Joan Alcover (Palma, 1854–1926), one of the leading figures of the Escola Mallorquina and author of "La Balanguera", the anthem of Mallorca. His son Pau Alcover de Haro handed the property over to the Obra Cultural Balear, which opened it as a cultural space in 2008 following extensive renovation work. The museum displays manuscripts, correspondence, books and original furnishings belonging to the poet.
Café, Courtyard, Programme
Inside the restored Mallorcan manor house you'll find a small bar and a library dedicated to the author. The charming inner courtyard is a lovely spot to linger over a coffee, beer, vermouth or pa amb oli. Those who visit regularly will discover a lively cultural programme: book launches, conferences, workshops, talks and literary gatherings all take place here, underpinned by a strong connection to Mallorcan and Catalan language and culture.
Finding Your Way There
Can Alcover sits in the Centre neighbourhood of Palma's old town, close to the Cathedral, at Carrer de Sant Alonso 24. Parking in the surrounding area is tricky.
