Description

Can Barceló is a historic residential building in the Modernisme style, tucked away in the old town of Palma.

Architecture & History

The apartment building was constructed on the site of a former textile factory belonging to the Barceló family. It was designed by Bartomeu Ferrà i Perelló (1843–1924), a master builder, archaeologist and writer. The building features a ground floor, three upper storeys and a terrace crowned by an elegant balustrade. The façade is adorned with nine mosaic panels representing the themes of music, architecture, literature, ceramics, textiles and trade.

A Living Heritage Building

Can Barceló is no museum — people actually live here, and part of the building is home to an anarcho-cultural centre that is open to the public. The interior can therefore only be experienced within that context, whilst the façade with its mosaic panels and striking windows is freely accessible to all.

Location & Surroundings

Can Barceló stands at Plaça de Quadrado, 9, in the Centre quarter of Palma's old town. It occupies a corner of the square, which is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Palma.
