Description
The Centro Cultural La Misericordia is a cultural centre in the heart of Palma, bringing together a library, exhibition spaces and a freely accessible garden beneath one historic roof.
A Historic Building with a Remarkable Past
The building's origins date back to 1677. Since 1977, the complex has been managed by the Consell Insular de Mallorca. Beneath the building lies the Aljub de la Misericòrdia — a largely unknown historic cistern of Arab origin that was opened to the public following a renovation, and is one of the most extraordinary spaces the centre has to offer.
Library, Exhibitions and Events
The Biblioteca Artesana forms the heart of the centre, with a study area, individual workstations and bookable study rooms. The cultural programme is wonderfully varied — regularly changing exhibitions across several floors covering a wide range of themes, concerts and markets in the courtyard, and events such as the Atlántida Festival, comic fairs, Catalan Book Week and a secondhand book week. Monthly workshops in a range of craft techniques are also on offer, and at Christmas the centre is well known for its elaborately staged nativity display.
Garden and Atmosphere
The centre's garden is free to enter and is regarded as a peaceful retreat in the middle of the city — ideal for reading, a quiet moment or simply unwinding. The building's architecture speaks for itself: its impressive rooms and historic courtyard define the character of the place. The overall atmosphere is calm and welcoming, whether you're here to study or to enjoy the cultural programme.
Location in the Centre Quarter
The Centro Cultural La Misericordia is situated at Carrer de la Misericòrdia 2 in the Centre quarter, 07012 Palma — a central location that is easily reached on foot.
