Description
The Embasament de Cúber is a reservoir in the north-west of Mallorca, set high in the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana.
Drinking water reservoir in the Tramuntana
Constructed in the early 1970s, Cúber works alongside a second reservoir to supply Palma de Mallorca with drinking water. It holds around 4.6 million cubic metres. The water glows a striking turquoise, framed by the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana — a backdrop that feels more like the high Alps than a Mediterranean island. Swimming is not permitted.
Walking around the lake
A flat circular trail runs around the entire reservoir — a peaceful, easy-going route of around 4.5 km that you can complete in about an hour. If you fancy a longer outing, the path can be extended into the surrounding mountain terrain, including multi-summit routes marked with blue dots and cairns. Cúber also sits along the long-distance GR221 trail. Along the way, you'll regularly come across donkeys, goats, and sheep.
Getting there and parking
Access is via the mountain road MA-10, which winds through the Tramuntana. The drive takes around 45 minutes from Bunyola via Fornalutx, or about an hour from Pollença via Lluc. There is free parking right at the lake, though spaces are limited and it can get very tight at weekends. There have been break-ins on the car park, so don't leave valuables in your vehicle.
