Description
The Edifici Casasayas is a historic Modernisme ensemble in the heart of Palma's city centre.
Two façades, one ensemble
What appears at first glance to be a single building turns out to be a pair: two nearly symmetrical corner buildings face each other and together form the Can Casasayas ensemble. The façades, with their balconies, arches and decorative detailing, are a widely admired expression of Catalan Modernisme in Mallorca — stylistically rooted in the Art Nouveau tradition, with echoes of other Spanish architects of the era. It is the combined effect of both buildings as a unified composition that draws visitors back to the square time and again.
History & the original plan
The two buildings were constructed between 1908 and 1911. The original design included an elevated walkway connecting the two — a proposal the city council rejected, leaving the buildings separated by the street to this day. What was conceived as a residential and hotel project ultimately became a mix of residential and office use.
Where to find it
The Edifici Casasayas stands at Costa de Can Santacília 8 in the Centre district of Palma. The square in front of the buildings sits in the heart of the old town and, shaded by trees, makes for a pleasant spot to pause and take it all in.
