Description

The Església de Sant Marçal is a parish church in the heart of Sa Cabaneta, within the municipality of Marratxí.

History and Architecture

The Church of the Virgin of Marratxí is documented as far back as a papal bull issued by Pope Innocent IV in 1248. The current building was constructed on its present site between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In 1861 the church was extended, with the two towers on the main façade added two years later. A comprehensive restoration was completed in 1992. Inside, a large high altarpiece and further artistic furnishings define the space, while both the exterior and interior are considered to be in excellent repair.

The Forecourt and the Fira del Fang

A generous esplanade stretches out in front of the church, where community events are held on a regular basis. The square is particularly well known as the setting for the Fira del Fang, a pottery and ceramics fair at which craftspeople display and sell their work — from handmade tableware to decorative pieces. The fair has become a firm fixture in the local calendar and draws visitors year after year.

Atmosphere and Occasions

The church and its surroundings have a calm, contemplative feel. The spacious forecourt also provides a dignified setting for baptisms, weddings, and other celebrations, well away from the bustle of traffic. The feast of Sant Marçal is celebrated on 30 June.

Location and Getting There

The church is located at Carrer Pedro de Veri 1 in Sa Cabaneta, at the entrance to the village. Parking is available directly at the entrance, with a dedicated accessible parking space and an accessible entrance.
