Description
The Església de Santa Maria la Major is a Catholic parish church in the heart of Inca, built on the site of an earlier medieval parish. The current structure dates from 1703.
Architecture and Interior
The church is built in the Mallorcan Baroque style, featuring a single-nave layout with a semicircular apse. The bell tower, which incorporates Gothic elements and dates from between the 16th and 17th centuries, is a particular highlight. Inside, the space is defined by elegant arches, stained-glass windows, and intricate carvings and paintings set within the side niches. The organ and a statue of Christ are among the most impressive features of the interior.
Museum and Cultural Use
The church building houses a museum containing artworks and religious relics. Entry to the church itself is free of charge, while a separate fee applies for the museum. The church also serves as a venue for classical music concerts and is the focal point of Inca's Easter processions.
Location and Square
The church stands at Plaça Santa Maria la Major 1, right in the centre of Inca. The generous square in front of the building is a wonderful spot to linger, surrounded by bars and shops. The church is fully accessible.
