Description
The Església Nova is an unfinished neo-Gothic church in Son Servera in the east of Mallorca — a listed monument that captivates with its open, roofless architecture.
A Church Without a Roof
Construction of the Església Nova began at the start of the 20th century and was never completed due to lack of funds. The result is a remarkable sacred building: tall, intricate stone walls, pointed arches, buttresses and large window openings frame an interior that has no roof — the sky becomes part of the space itself. This unintended openness gives the building a character all of its own, sitting somewhere between ecclesiastical architecture and ruin. A multilingual information board on site explains the key stages of the building's history.
Atmosphere and Current Use
The well-kept site and the surrounding square make for a peaceful visit. The church also serves as a venue for weddings. Admission is free.
Location & Getting There
The church stands at Carrer de ses Creus 4 in the heart of Son Servera, close to the market square. Finding parking nearby can be tricky on market days, so a visit during the week is recommended.
