Description

Fornalutx is a small mountain village in the Tramuntana range in Mallorca — with a bus stop as the central arrival point for visitors coming without a car.

A village seemingly frozen in time

Fornalutx sits on the slopes of the Tramuntana and is defined by its organic, time-worn architecture: virtually every building is constructed or faced in natural stone, and the streetscape — with its countless steps and stairways — feels like stepping back into another era. The village is a member of the association of the most beautiful villages in Spain, an accolade that most visitors would agree is thoroughly deserved.

Where to find it

The village lies in the north-west of the island, on the hillsides of the Tramuntana. The postal address is 07109 Fornalutx, Balearic Islands. Without a car, you can reach Fornalutx on bus route L 212. Drivers should be aware that parking within the village is extremely scarce in summer, whilst December tends to offer plenty of spaces. At the village entrance there is an ORA car park (a paid short-stay zone).

Casa de la Vila & the village centre

Well worth a look is the courtyard of the Casa de la Vila, the village town hall: beautifully maintained and reached via a flight of steps down to the entrance. The village centre is compact and easily explored on foot in next to no time.

Local festivals & quieter seasons

The village festivals take place during the last week of August and the first week of September, bringing a noticeable buzz to Fornalutx. Outside these dates and the main summer season, the village is exceptionally peaceful.
