Description

La Porciúncula is a Franciscan TOR church complex in Platja de Palma that surprises visitors with its extraordinary architecture and an adjoining museum.

A Church of Light and Colour

What the exterior gives little hint of, the interior more than delivers: the inside of the church is lined all the way round with stained-glass windows that create a breathtaking 360-degree spectacle of colour and light. The glasswork depicts biblical scenes and bathes the circular space in an ever-shifting play of colour. Architecturally, the clearly circular — or rather oval — floor plan stands out, which is highly unusual for a place of worship and is consistently described by visitors as remarkably atmospheric. The contemplative, peaceful atmosphere inside is another quality that makes this place truly special.

A Museum of Mallorcan History

Access to the church takes you through the adjoining ethnological and numismatic museum, which documents the history of Mallorca from prehistoric times right through to the development of tourism on the island. It is thoughtfully presented, with archaeological finds and historical everyday objects that bring the island's past to life — well worth a visit in its own right.

Location

The complex is situated at Avinguda de Fra Joan Llabrés 1 in the Platja de Palma i Pla de Sant Jordi district, 07600 Palma. The grounds are surrounded by gardens and a Mediterranean pine forest. Free on-site parking is available.

Good to Know

On regular days (outside of services), entry to the church is only possible via the museum. The entire complex is fully accessible: there is a step-free entrance, accessible parking, accessible toilets, and seating throughout.
