Description

The Iglesia de la Cartuja is the monastery church of the Real Cartuja de Valldemossa – one of the most celebrated historic ensembles on Mallorca, set in the mountain village of Valldemossa.

Interior: Frescoes, Stucco and Remarkable Acoustics

The church follows a Latin cross plan and was begun in 1751, completed in 1812, in a neoclassical style. The interior is entirely stuccoed and painted with ceiling frescoes. The baroque decorative work and ceiling frescoes are the centrepiece of the space. Particularly striking is the acoustics: the room feels as though it was conceived for music and song.

Part of a Wider Ensemble

The church is not accessible independently – it forms part of the expansive Carthusian complex. Admission is included in the combined ticket covering the monastery and palace ensemble. Alongside the church, the complex comprises former monks' cells, palace rooms and several small museums within the old monastery. Certain areas – including rooms connected to Frédéric Chopin – may carry a separate charge.

Chopin and a Musical Legacy

Within the monastery complex you'll find rooms dedicated to Frédéric Chopin's stay here, including original scores, manuscripts and personal belongings. Piano concerts take place occasionally in the palace section. The combination of the church's exceptional acoustics and this rich musical heritage gives the place a truly distinctive atmosphere.

Finding It

The Iglesia de la Cartuja is located at Plaça Cartoixa 11H in the heart of Valldemossa. The historic village, with its cobbled lanes, forms the immediate setting for your visit.
