Description
The Església de Santa Eulàlia is one of Palma's oldest churches — a Gothic place of worship nestled in the heart of the city's historic centre.
History and Architecture
The church was built in 1236 following the Christian reconquest of Mallorca, on the site of a former Moorish mosque. Its Gothic style defines the character of the building, while the outer façade and bell tower carry Neo-Gothic touches. Inside, the nave feels considerably more spacious than the exterior suggests. Notable external details include a circular rose window and a set of gargoyles. Within, coloured stained-glass windows cast ever-changing light across the interior, complemented by altarpieces, side chapels and religious artworks. The church has been listed as a Cultural Monument (Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1931.
Rooftop Terrace and Views
A steep, narrow spiral staircase leads up to the rooftop terrace, where you're rewarded with panoramic views across the rooftops of the Old Town. The climb demands a head for heights and is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility.
Atmosphere
Inside, the mood is calm and contemplative — noticeably quieter than the bustle of the surrounding lanes. Visitor numbers here are considerably lower than at the Cathedral, giving the space a far more intimate feel.
Location
The church stands at Plaça de Santa Eulàlia 2 in the Centre district, right in the middle of Palma's Old Town. Step-free access at the entrance allows visitors to reach the nave at ground level.
Admission and Practical Notes
An admission fee is charged for tourist visits, with access to the rooftop terrace included in the ticket. The Spiritual Mallorca Card is available as a combined entry option covering the church and other attractions. Photography inside the church is not permitted.
