Description
The Iglesia de Santa Margarita is a Gothic church and military parish church in the heart of Palma, and one of the most historically significant sacred buildings in the city.
History & Listed Status
Construction of the Iglesia de Santa Margarita began in 1232, making it the first newly built church in the city after the Conquista. Its origins are closely tied to the arrival of Franciscan monks in 1238, and the site has a direct historical connection to the taking of Palma by James I of Aragon. In 1949 the church was declared a National Monument, and it was restored in the mid-1960s. Since then it has served as a military church.
Architecture & Interior
The Gothic structure impresses with its characteristic simplicity, widely regarded as one of its greatest strengths. The large stained-glass windows are a particular highlight: they bathe the interior in coloured light and create a truly distinctive atmosphere.
Exhibitions & Museum
Alongside regular services, the church houses a museum that is free to enter. Temporary exhibitions and presentations on historical and military themes take place regularly, drawing an engaged and curious audience.
Getting There
The Iglesia de Santa Margarita is located in the Centre district at Carrer de Sant Miquel 69 in Palma — an easily walkable spot right in the heart of the historic old town.
