The IOM was founded in 1984 by the ophthalmologist couple Riera Miró — originally in the premises of the former Clínica Rotger on Calle General Riera in Palma. As the centre grew in both technology and staff, it moved in 1990 to larger premises nearby — to its current location on Carrer d'Anselm Turmeda. The close ties with Clínica Rotger have continued to this day.
