Description

The Centro Cultural La Misericordia is a cultural centre in the heart of Palma, housed in a historic complex originally founded in 1677 as the Casa de la Misericordia by the Jesuit order.

History and Architecture

The cultural centre traces its origins to the Casa de la Misericordia, founded by the Jesuit order in 1677 as a house of mercy offering shelter to those in need — including orphans and destitute widows of Palma. The impressive complex encompasses several exhibition halls, two courtyards, a restored cistern, a chapel, and library spaces. Visitors consistently describe the architecture as monumental and deeply striking.

The Aljub — a Restored Cistern

The centrepiece of the complex is the Aljub, a historic cistern that once served as a water reservoir and has since been carefully restored. The lighting and atmosphere of the underground vault are widely regarded as magical, spectacular, and remarkably well preserved. As only a limited number of visitors can enter at any one time, arriving early is well worth it.

Courtyards, Garden and the Ficus Tree

The two inner courtyards provide a tranquil setting, equally well suited to events or a quiet moment of rest. In the garden grows an exceptionally large ficus tree, which a number of visitors have singled out as a highlight in its own right.

Cultural Programme

La Misericordia operates as an active cultural venue, hosting exhibitions, concerts, guided tours, workshops, and a wide range of other events. The building is also home to the Biblioteca de Cultura Artesana — which includes the extensive Lluís Alemany collection — as well as the Arxiu del So i de la Imatge de Mallorca (the Archive of Sound and Image of Mallorca). The public library is a well-regarded spot for study and research, with internet access and computer workstations available. The centre is run by the Consell de Mallorca.

Location

The Centro Cultural La Misericordia is located at Plaça de s'Hospital 4 in the Centre district of Palma. Accessible entrances and an accessible car parking space are available on site.
