Description

The Far d'Alcanada is a historic lighthouse sitting on a small rocky islet just off the coast of Alcúdia in the north of Mallorca.

A beacon on the rocks

The whitewashed lighthouse perches on a tiny rocky islet and is one of the most iconic sights of the Alcanada urbanisation. Inaugurated on 15 May 1861, automated during the 1960s and restored in the mid-1980s, it remains in operation to this day. The panorama across the Bay of Alcúdia is particularly photogenic at sunrise and sunset — and on a full moon night, the scene takes on a magic all of its own.

On foot, swimming or by kayak

The islet can be reached in several ways. The water between the shore and the island is shallow enough to wade across in places — in spots it only comes up to your waist. Swimming across is equally straightforward given the short distance. You can also paddle out by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Do bear in mind that mooring to the reefs is strictly prohibited.

Coastal path & surroundings

A narrow coastal walking trail runs past the lighthouse below the nearby golf course. The path is peaceful and sees very little traffic. The surroundings are unspoilt and well kept; in the height of summer it's worth noting that there is no natural shade in the area.

How to find it

The lighthouse is located at Diseminado Disseminat 10, 07400 Alcúdia. For more on the lighthouse and its history, visit farsdebalears.org.
