Description
The Museu de la Mar is a small maritime museum perched above the harbour of Port de Sóller, dedicated to the seafaring history of the town and its surroundings.
Collection and Exhibition Themes
The museum explores the seafaring and fishing history of Sóller and Port de Sóller. On display are ship models, historic photographs, navigational instruments, and a range of other maritime artefacts. A dedicated exhibition on the history of female lighthouse keepers stands out as a particularly compelling highlight. The collection is complemented by audiovisual elements: the lower floor features film footage and interviews, including a documentary about the history of the lighthouse.
Location and Getting There
The museum is located on Carrer de Santa Caterina d'Alexandria in Port de Sóller, on a rise above the harbour. The walk up through the narrow lanes is short but noticeably steep. From the entrance area, you're rewarded with a sweeping panoramic view over Port de Sóller, the bay, the sea, the surrounding cliffs, and the Tramuntana mountains.
Practical Information
Entry is free of charge. Information panels are written in Spanish and Catalan; however, texts can also be downloaded in German via QR code. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the museum. Step-free access and an accessible toilet are both provided.
