Description
The Porta Murada is a historic town gate in Santanyí, in the south-east of Mallorca, and the main entrance to the village's old town.
A gate with history
The Porta Murada was built in 1571 to protect the residents of Santanyí from the Turkish raids that were commonplace at the time. Constructed almost entirely from locally quarried Santanyí stone, it is a fully fortified town gate. Particularly remarkable is a prison that has survived intact within the structure itself.
Where to find it
The gate sits on Carrer del Centre 14A in Santanyí and marks the threshold into the village's historic centre. On market days the area around the Porta Murada buzzes with activity; visit on a non-market day and you'll find a much quieter, more contemplative atmosphere.
