Description
The prehistoric settlement of S'Heretat – also known as Es Claper des Gegants – is an archaeological site of the Talayotic culture near Capdepera in the north-east of Mallorca.
A Place from the Bronze Age
The site dates back to around 1000 BC and belongs to the Talayotic culture. What has survived are mainly wall remains; two information panels on site explain the historical background and the excavations that took place, in three languages. The Mallorcan name "Es Claper des Gegants" – roughly translated as "Stone Ground of the Giants" – is a term used in Mallorcan to describe areas with remains of cyclopean prehistoric structures.
What to Expect
Of the original settlement, wall remains are largely what survives today. If you know Ses Païsses in Artà, you'll find considerably less here – this place is modest, quiet, and rarely visited. The signposting along the route is good. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the path runs across stony tracks; it's also worth noting that two gates currently require a ladder to get past, which limits accessibility for some visitors.
Location & Getting There
The settlement lies within the municipality of Capdepera (07589). Getting there is not entirely straightforward: access is near a golf course, parking on site is only makeshift, and part of the route runs alongside a road without a pavement. If you're cycling or on foot, the visit fits nicely into a hiking or biking tour.
