Puig de sa Bassa
Description
Puig de sa Bassa is a hiking summit near Fornalutx in north-west Mallorca, rewarding those who make the climb with sweeping, far-reaching views.
The Ascent & Route
The climb starts in Fornalutx and is characteristically steep for this part of the island. Higher up, the path is barely marked — the occasional cairn points the way, but there is no signposted trail. Sure-footedness is absolutely essential; anyone heading out with younger children or less experienced walkers should factor in the rough, uneven terrain. The descent demands equal attention, as the way down is difficult to follow.
At the Summit
Once you reach the top, a fantastic panorama awaits — on a clear day it is well worth the effort. A fire-service watchtower stands on the summit, used for early detection of wildfires; it cannot be entered. In spring and autumn, cloud can settle around the peak and limit the views considerably.
Access & Restrictions
Access is subject to restrictions: outside the main season, the final stretch to the summit is only open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Between August and January the area is closed on most days — signs on site warn of the use of firearms. Careful planning before you set off is strongly advised.
Getting There
The starting point for the walk is in Fornalutx (07109), a mountain village in north-west Mallorca, from where the ascent to Puig de sa Bassa begins on foot.
