Races Autòctones de les Illes Balears is an organisation based in Palma dedicated to preserving and promoting the native animal breeds of the Balearic Islands.

Native Breeds of the Balearics

The organisation brings together work centred on the islands' indigenous animal breeds — including cattle, sheep, goat and dog breeds. The sheep breeds represented on the Balearic Islands include the Ovella mallorquina, the Ovella menorquina, the Ovella eivissenca and the Ovella roja mallorquina. On the cattle side, the focus falls on the Vaca mallorquina and the Vaca menorquina. The islands' geographic isolation has played a significant role in safeguarding these breeds over the centuries.

Breeder Associations & Networking

At the heart of the organisation are its affiliated breeder associations (Associacions), which jointly carry the breeding and institutional work forward. This is complemented by ties with wider institutions, as well as news and Certàmens — livestock shows and competitions at which the native breeds are put on public display.
