Salt de Freu (also known as Torrente de Orient) is a natural waterfall near the mountain village of Orient, reached via a walking trail through the surrounding countryside.
The Waterfall and What Makes It Special
Salt de Freu tumbles down several tiers into a pool — but only when the river is carrying enough water. It's most reliably impressive in the winter months; in summer, the riverbed can dry out completely. If you're hoping to catch the waterfall in full flow, plan your visit during the wetter months, ideally after a few consecutive days of rain.
Walking Trail & Terrain
The path to Salt de Freu winds through unspoilt countryside dotted with ancient olive trees. The terrain is rocky and uneven — sturdy footwear is essential. If you'd like to use the dry riverbed as your return route, you'll need a rope; heading back that way without the right kit isn't recommended. There's also the option of approaching through the mountains from Santa Maria del Camino — a route of around two hours and fifteen minutes.
Getting There & Location
Salt de Freu sits along the Ma-2100 near Orient, roughly two kilometres from the village. The approach roads are narrow and in poor condition, so take care if you're driving a hire car. Your sat-nav will bring you to a stony track where the actual ascent begins. At weekends and during peak season the spot can get busy; weekdays tend to be much quieter.
