Description
Sant Bartomeu is the parish church of Montuïri, a village in the heart of Mallorca, and its striking silhouette defines the character of the entire town.
A Building with History
The church dates back to the 14th century and was substantially remodelled in the mid-16th century. A further extension followed towards the end of that same century, with additional alterations and expansions carried out throughout the 18th century. One of the portals bears the date 1643. The ensemble is completed by two sundials, which can be spotted on the outer facade.
A Presence Above the Village
Sant Bartomeu rises prominently above the rooftops of Montuïri, forming the architectural centrepiece of the town. The broad flight of steps leading up from the Plaça Major dates from the early 19th century. In the evening light, when the illuminations come on, the building takes on a particularly impressive quality.
Finding It
The church stands right on the Plaça Major (No. 14) in the centre of Montuïri. The narrow lanes surrounding the square are typical of the historic village layout and make for a lovely wander on foot.
