Description
Son Fornés is a prehistoric archaeological site near Montuïri in the heart of Mallorca, where the remains of a Talayotic settlement can be explored.
Millennia in the Open Air
At Son Fornés you come face to face with the structures of a Talayotic settlement around 3,000 years old: circular talayots built from massive stone blocks, clearly visible foundations of former round houses, and a site that is still being actively researched. Around 15% of the area has been uncovered so far — excavations have been ongoing for decades. Particularly striking are the sheer scale of the stone blocks used and one especially large talayot whose interior, complete with a central pillar, you can walk through. Information boards in Spanish, English and German help you make sense of the structures, and additional content in German can be accessed via smartphone.
Location & Getting There
The site lies along the Ma-3200 near Montuïri, Illes Balears. It can be reached on foot from Montuïri in around 40 minutes, though the route offers little shade. Parking is available directly at the site, and free on-street parking can also be found nearby. The associated Archaeological Museum is close by and makes a worthwhile companion visit to the excavation site.
Practical Information
Admission is free. Picnic tables and shaded benches are available on site. There are no toilet facilities on the grounds. The site is unfenced, so you are free to wander amongst the remains at your own pace.
