Description
The Teatro Romano is a historic monument in Alcúdia — a remarkably well-preserved Roman theatre carved directly into the rock as part of the ancient city of Pollentia.
A Theatre Carved from the Rock
The Teatro Romano is hewn straight into the natural sandstone, making it a fascinating example of Roman engineering. The tiers, stage and proscenium are still clearly visible. The theatre forms part of the archaeological complex of Pollentia and sits within an extensive excavation site — if you want to explore everything at your own pace, it's worth setting aside plenty of time.
Excavations and Museum
Your ticket includes entry to an archaeological museum where finds from the site are on display. Information boards are provided throughout, and an audio guide is available via QR code — you'll need a mobile internet connection to access it. Active excavations are ongoing, and visitors occasionally get the chance to watch the archaeologists at work up close.
Location and Access
The site is in Alcúdia and can be reached on foot from the old town. One important thing to know: the entrance shown in some map apps leading directly to the theatre doesn't actually exist — access is only via the official museum entrance from Alcúdia. The theatre itself is a few hundred metres from the rest of the excavation complex. There is free parking right at the entrance. As the site is largely open and unsheltered, a visit in mild weather makes for a much more comfortable experience.
