He worked as a doctor and consultant psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital & Institute of Psychiatry in London (1986–1994), going on to serve as a Lecturer (1991–1994) and then Associate Professor (1995–2000) at the University of London. Between 1994 and 1997 he was also Associate Professor of Psychology at the Universitat de les Illes Balears. He is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and of the British Association for Psychopharmacology. His areas of expertise include community psychiatry, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, adolescent psychiatry, and psychoanalysis.
