Description
Torre de Paraires is a medieval defensive tower on the Palma waterfront, built to guard the entrance to Portopí harbour.
History & Significance
Torre de Paraires was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and was known at the time as Torre del Puerto y la Cadena — the easternmost of four towers protecting the harbour of Portopí. Together with the Castell de Sant Carles on the opposite side of Porto Pi, it formed a strategic coastal defence system. The striking ashlar-stone structure is considered a well-preserved historical monument and one of the iconic landmarks of the Palma bay.
Architecture & Appearance
The tower's square footprint, battlements and arrow slits give it an immediately recognisable silhouette. Viewed from the water or from the shoreline, it defines the character of the old harbour entrance and makes a striking impression against the Mallorcan coastline.
Getting There
Torre de Paraires stands at Avinguda de Gabriel Roca 51 in the Ponent neighbourhood of Palma, right on the waterfront near Portopí harbour. It is within easy walking distance of the cruise terminal.
