Torrent de Biniaraix
Description
The Torrent de Biniaraix is a mountain gorge in the Serra de Tramuntana on Mallorca and the starting point of one of the most spectacular walking routes on the island.
Gorge, stone path and sweeping views
The Barranc de Biniaraix cuts through a spectacular gorge of sheer rock faces, streams, scree slopes and dramatic panoramas. For much of the way, the path is made up of ancient stone slabs and cobbled steps — a testament to remarkable craftsmanship that has been carefully preserved to this day. The Camí des Barranc and the Camí Vell are both listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural under the category of Monumento. The route is particularly impressive when the stream is flowing. Views stretch across the gorge all the way to the sea and over the Sóller valley.
The route
The path forms part of the GR221 long-distance trail through the Serra de Tramuntana. It connects the village of Biniaraix with the Cuber reservoir, winding through mountain scenery that is quintessentially Tramuntana. Those who make it to the summit are rewarded with extraordinary views. One highlight along the way is the Gorg de Can Catí, reached via around 1,700 stone steps. The ancient pilgrimage route through the gorge continues all the way to the monastery at Lluc. The walk is considered demanding — the ascent towards Cuber in particular is steep.
Where to find it
The Torrent de Biniaraix lies in the Illes Balears. The walk begins in the village of Biniaraix, where the gorge path sets off.
Who is it for
The gorge walk is best suited to physically fit and experienced walkers. For those less accustomed to mountain terrain, the ascent is a genuine challenge. Families with children will find the lower section of the route quite manageable — the stretch up to the Gorg de Can Catí is often recommended as a family-friendly outing.
