Description

The Torrent de Pareis is a natural gorge near Sa Calobra in the municipality of Escorca — one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on the whole of Mallorca.

Gorge, shingle beach and sea

The Torrent de Pareis ends at a dramatic rocky archway where the gorge opens out onto a shingle beach along the Sa Calobra coastline. Sheer limestone walls, enormous boulders and the interplay of gorge, beach and crystal-clear water make this a truly one-of-a-kind natural experience. Pedestrian tunnels carved through the rock form part of the approach route and leave a lasting impression.

Hiking through the gorge

Traversing the gorge in full is a demanding undertaking, suitable only for experienced and physically fit walkers with the right equipment. There are several extremely challenging sections, and the route becomes particularly hazardous in wet or rainy conditions — it should be avoided entirely at such times. If you simply want a first glimpse into the gorge, it's perfectly possible to explore a shorter stretch from the beach at Sa Calobra without committing to the full traverse.

Location and getting there

The Torrent de Pareis lies in the municipality of Escorca (07315), deep in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The drive along the road to Sa Calobra is long, winding and genuinely demanding, with tight hairpin bends and a steady stream of cyclists to watch out for. A paid car park is available on arrival; from there it's a short walk to the cove, as vehicles have no direct access to the beach. Arriving early in the morning means noticeably less traffic — both on the road and at the beach itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit the gorge without any hiking experience?
Completing the full traverse of the gorge is recommended only for very experienced walkers with appropriate equipment. That said, a shorter section at the gorge entrance can be explored directly from the beach at Sa Calobra, making it accessible to less seasoned visitors as well.
When should you avoid the Torrent de Pareis?
Hiking through the gorge is extremely dangerous in rainy or generally wet conditions. Even after rainfall has passed, water can render the gorge impassable, so it's worth checking conditions before you set off.
How do I get from the car park to the beach?
The beach is only reachable on foot from the paid car park, as vehicles have no direct access to the cove. From Sa Calobra you can then continue on to the entrance of the Torrent de Pareis.
