Description
The Torres de Gumara (El Temple) are a medieval monument in the historic heart of Palma – two square towers that stand among the most historically rich landmarks in the city.
History in Stone
The two square towers, known as the Torres de Gumara, were once part of the Almudaina de Gumara – a fortified complex within the Moorish city. After the Conquest, the Knights Templar used the site as their base, which gave the entire ensemble its alternative name, "El Temple". Since 2004, the towers have been officially listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest).
Current State & Future Vision
The complex is currently undergoing a restoration phase. The outward appearance has changed as a result of the ongoing works – something that some visitors have noted with a critical eye. The adjoining church is not open to the public. Plans are in place to transform the building into a museum dedicated to the history of Palma.
Finding It
The Torres de Gumara are located at Carrer del Temple 9 in the Centre district of Palma – right in the old town, making them an easy and rewarding stop on any stroll through the historic quarter.
