Description
The Via Verda de Mallorca is a cycling and walking trail built on a former railway line in the east of the island, linking Sant Llorenç des Cardassar with Manacor and Artà.
Following old tracks through the east
The Via Verda traces the route of a former railway line that once connected Manacor with Artà, passing through the towns of Sant Llorenç, Son Carrió and Son Servera. The trail covers 29 kilometres one way. The surface is mostly gravel, with some stony and uneven stretches here and there. There are no significant climbs or technical challenges along the way.
On foot, by bike or on horseback
The trail is well suited to cycling, walking, running and horse riding. Picnic areas are dotted along the route at several points. At the old railway station in Sant Llorenç, a viewpoint looks out over the town. Along the way you'll also find a restaurant housed in a former station, making it a lovely spot to stop and rest. A railway museum in Son Carrió sits on the route as well.
Nature and quiet away from the roads
The entire trail is separated from road traffic, giving the route a wonderfully peaceful feel. It winds through the Llevant countryside with views towards the coast. Wildlife along the way includes tortoises, rabbits and snakes.
Finding the Via Verda
The trailhead in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar sits within the municipality, postcode 07530. The stretch between Sant Llorenç and Artà is considered the most rewarding part of the route, while the section from Manacor runs closer to a main road.
