Description

The Via Verda Manacor–Artà is a nearly 30 km cycling and walking route following a former railway line in the east of Mallorca, passing through Son Servera.

Along old tracks through the Mallorcan countryside

The Via Verda follows the former railway line between Manacor and Artà, which was closed in 1977 and left to deteriorate for decades. Since October 2014, the route has connected the two towns as a cycling and walking trail, passing through Sant Llorenç, Son Carrió and Son Servera. Along the way, more than 15,000 shrubs and nearly 5,000 trees have been planted, including pine, holm oak, tamarind and mulberry. Restored stations and railway tunnels serve as reminders of the line's history.

Completely car-free all the way

The route is entirely car-free and winds through peaceful, rural countryside well away from the bustle of the coast. The terrain is flat to moderately hilly, making it well suited to gravel bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes; road bikes are not recommended due to the unpaved, sometimes stony surface. Some sections are bumpy, so sturdy tyres are advisable. As well as cycling, the route is popular for walking, running and a gentle stroll. Dogs are welcome on the Via Verda, provided they are kept on a lead.

The route & where to start

The full distance from Manacor to Artà is around 29 km. Those joining at Son Servera or Cala Millor have roughly 15 km to go until Artà. The Cala Millor entry point is on the Avinguda Llevant, where a path branches off towards the Via Verda at the junction with the main road. Signposting at the access points is not always straightforward. For the return journey from Artà to Manacor, the bus connection is a convenient and reliable option. On the section heading from Son Servera towards Artà, benches only begin to appear after around 7 km.

Where to find the Via Verda

The Via Verda is located within the municipality of Son Servera (07550) in the north-east of Mallorca. The website bikerentmallorca.com offers further information about the route.
