YOLO Cala Millor

YOLO Cala Millor is a German restaurant on a narrow side street in Cala Millor, a few steps back from the beach promenade. If you do not already know the address, you will walk straight past it. The place sits on the ground floor of an ordinary residential building on Carrer de Ca s'Hereu, one row back and away from the pedestrian zone — one of those houses you are more likely to be told about than to stumble upon. German cooking is advertised on plenty of signs along the east coast, though often mainly because German owners are behind them. At YOLO it is the other way round: here the craft itself is on the menu. The schnitzel is the flagship and arrives with fries and a small salad, with either a mushroom or a paprika sauce alongside. What YOLO Cala Millor cooks When the house asks its own guests to name a favourite, the same dishes come back every time: schnitzel, spare ribs, pork medallions, prawns — and Thai curry. That last one is no slip, it is part of the plan. Alongside the German classics the kitchen runs a distinctly international second track of wok dishes, curries, bowls and gyros, plus a tapas selection. You can eat thoroughly German here; the next table may well be having Thai rice. Beyond the fixed menu the house cooks changing dishes, and that is where it turns properly German. The beef roulade, for instance, is served the way it should be: with red cabbage and dumplings, or with boiled potatoes if you prefer. That is rarer on Mallorca than you might think — most places carrying a German label stop at the breadcrumbs. Asparagus from Bruchsal The most striking thing about YOLO is its asparagus season. The house has German asparagus brought in from Bruchsal and sets a dedicated asparagus card alongside the regular menu, with several dishes on it — classically with hollandaise, or refined in its own kitchen. Anyone who has ever tried to source decent white asparagus on a Mediterranean island can guess what that takes. During this period the kitchen explicitly advises booking ahead, because the asparagus dishes go quickly. The second season the house takes seriously is chanterelle time. That gets its own moment too. Together the two say more about this kitchen than any self-description could: someone here cooks by the German calendar rather than by what a holiday resort expects. A small evening restaurant YOLO is an evening house, and a small one. The dining room does not hold many tables, and the house itself regularly asks guests to book ahead — advice worth taking seriously. The furnishing is plain and homely, the noise level correspondingly low; this is a room to settle into rather than be moved through. Families are expressly welcome. There is a children's play corner and high chairs, so the little ones are occupied while the table eats in peace. Dogs are allowed too. The house advertises both of these itself — in a resort where many businesses simply play the turnover game, that is a statement. If you are after German home cooking in the east of the island without ending up in a schnitzel hall, this is the right address.
