AKUNA
California, USAelectronic · downtempo · psytrance · psychill
Akuna is a DJ and producer of Ghanaian-American heritage, raised in California. His path into club culture was shaped during his undergraduate studies in Cleveland, Ohio, where he discovered the African-American roots of Detroit techno – a revelation that fundamentally redirected his musical approach. Since then, he has explored techno history chronologically, tracing it back to its origins in Detroit and the broader Midwest.
Sonically, Akuna moves between psychill, downtempo, organica and psytrance, weaving them into hybrid live DJ sets designed as transformative dance rituals – often in ecstatic dance contexts. His music carries afro-diasporic influences interwoven with R&B and dance elements. Through the Moonshine collective, he contributed to "Pain & Pleasure," a collaborative track featuring Amaal Nuux, Vanyfox and Aluna, reflecting the label's global afro-diasporic vision. Growing up in a Ghanaian-American household, Akuna faced initial scepticism from family about his DJ career, and today positions himself as an advocate for the visibility of Black artists in electronic music.
