Aquelarre emerged in 1971 in Buenos Aires from the ashes of the influential Argentine band Almendra: bassist Emilio del Güercio and drummer Rodolfo García joined forces with guitarist Héctor Starc and keyboardist Hugo González Neira. Their official debut came in 1972 – shortly after an appearance at the B.A.Rock II festival in 1971. Their sound was far more sophisticated than mainstream Argentine rock of the era, characterised by surrealist lyrics, constant rhythmic and melodic shifts, and passages of free jazz. Between 1972 and 1975, four albums were released on the Trova and Talent/Microfon labels: the self-titled debut (1972), Candiles (1973), Brumas (1974) and Siesta (1975). In 1975 the band toured Spain, and in 1977 most of the lineup – minus González Neira – returned to Argentina for a farewell concert. Two reunion phases followed (1996–1998 and 2004–2013). Today, Aquelarre are regarded as one of the foremost representatives of Argentine prog and psychedelic rock.
