Banda de Música de Llucmajor
Llucmajor, Mallorcaclassical · wind-band · folk · traditional
The Banda de Música de Llucmajor is one of the oldest wind bands in Mallorca, founded in 1842 in the town of Llucmajor. Over more than 180 years of history, the ensemble underwent a significant artistic renewal from the 1970s onwards. Under conductor Vicenç Castellano, who took over in 1976 and was awarded Llucmajor's highest civic honour, the Espigolera, in 2004, the band advanced considerably in technique and quality. A dedicated music school was established to nurture new generations of musicians for the ensemble. The repertoire spans classical overtures, zarzuelas, original compositions and contemporary works. The band performs regularly at local festivals and processions in Llucmajor, including the Corpus Christi procession. Notable collaborations include performances with folk ensemble Xaloc, a jazz session with Jazz Fingers (2014), a joint project with theatre group Picadís (2012), and the production "Siau qui sou" (2016) honouring musician and poet Guillem d'Efak. In 2017 the band celebrated its 175th anniversary. Dutch composer Jacob de Haan visited Llucmajor for a three-day residency during which eight of his compositions were rehearsed and performed with the band.
