Banda de Música de Montuïri
Montuïri, Mallorca, Spanienclassical · traditional · brass-band
The Banda de Música de Montuïri is the longest continuously active organisation in its home village of Montuïri, a small hilltop town in the heart of Mallorca. The wind band is deeply embedded in local cultural life and has shaped the musical memory of the community for generations. Its most celebrated director was Pere Miralles, known as "Malherba", who led the band for 45 years and was a musician within it for a total of 65. He saved the ensemble from dissolution and, during the 1970s, turned it into a symbol of cultural renewal and Mallorcan identity – boldly performing politically charged pieces such as "Els Segadors", "La Balanguera" and the "Internationale". In June 2024, Montuïri honoured his life's work with a grand tribute concert under the motto "La banda sonora de tota una vida". Today, Margalida A. Taberner leads the ensemble as its first female director. The repertoire spans traditional Mallorcan music, classical wind-band literature and festive concert programmes. The band performs regularly across the island, including in the prestigious "Pare Antoni Martorell" concert series alongside fabiolers and xeremiers.
