Darkroom is a British electronic music project founded in 1996 under the name Collective, built around the core duo of Andrew "Os" Ostler (synthesizers, loops, bass clarinet) and Michael Bearpark (guitars, bass). Long-time collaborator Tim Bowness, vocalist of art-pop band No-Man, contributed voice and voice loops to many recordings. The project was originally formed to provide a live soundtrack at the Nevers Film Festival in France. Musically, Darkroom operates at the intersection of jungle/drum'n'bass loops, ambient textures and experimental arrangements — the band has cited inspirations including Steve Reich, Mouse on Mars and the Eno/Bowie collaborative albums. Releases such as "The Noise Is Unrest" (2019), "The Last Sense to Fade" (2022) and "Water Like Mbira" (2023) are available primarily through independent label Burning Shed. The project performs live mainly in the UK, delivering a dense, introspective sound that blends cool electronic layers with guitar work and atmospheric vocals.
