Derrick McKenzie

London, United Kingdomdisco · funk · house · electronic
Derrick McKenzie was born on 27 March 1964 in London and started drumming at the age of six, inspired by a friend playing in a reggae band. In the late 1980s he played with jazz-funk outfit Tranzeyance in Shoreditch before becoming a sought-after session drummer, including with Urban Species. In 1994, after two auditions, he joined Jamiroquai and has been the band's drummer ever since. Together they sold over 25 million albums, with his debut being *Return of the Space Cowboy*. Influenced by Patrice Rushen, Prince and drum legend Billy Cobham, McKenzie's rock-solid groove is a defining element of the Jamiroquai sound. Alongside his band work, he is active as a DJ, producer and remixer – releasing disco-funk tracks on Traxsource via his own Boogie Bus Music imprint, most recently collaborating with Sarina Voorn and Mark Lower on Groove Culture. As a DJ he performs at acclaimed venues including Pacha Ibiza. He is an artist who uniquely bridges live musicianship and dancefloor energy.
