Estopa

Estopa are brothers David (*1976) and José Muñoz (*1978) from Cornellà de Llobregat near Barcelona – a duo that has been one of the most commercially successful acts in Spanish music history since 1999. Their name comes from their time on the assembly line at a SEAT car factory, where a foreman would constantly shout "¡Dale estopa!" at them. Their sound blends Catalan rumba, folk rock, and flamenco with street-flavoured, everyday lyrics – a genuinely novel combination on the Spanish pop scene at the time. Their self-titled debut album (1999, BMG-Ariola) sold over one million copies and topped the Spanish charts, a feat achieved by all nine of their studio albums. Singles "El Run Run" and "Cuando Amanece" reached number one on Billboard's Spanish chart. They won Revelation of the Year and Best Spanish Band at the 2000 Amigo Awards and have since received two Latin Grammy nominations. Collaborators include Rosario Flores, Macaco, Ana Belén, and Mexican cumbia artist Celso Piña. Most recently they released the number-one album Fuego (2019) and Estopía (2024); their current label is Sony Music. Live, they have been filling large arenas for over two decades.
