Franz Liszt (22 October 1811, Doborján/now Raiding, Austria – 31 July 1886, Bayreuth) was one of the most important pianists and composers of the Romantic era. Recognised as a child prodigy, he studied under Carl Czerny in Vienna and quickly became the most celebrated concert virtuoso in Europe. His so-called Glanzzeit ("time of splendour") in the 1840s made him the greatest concert superstar of the 19th century. In 1847, persuaded by Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, he gave up touring; his final paid concert took place in Yelisavetgrad. As a composer, Liszt invented the symphonic poem, producing twelve works in the genre. His best-known compositions include the Hungarian Rhapsodies, the Piano Sonata in B minor, and the Liebesträume. He maintained a close artistic relationship with Richard Wagner and taught hundreds of pianists throughout his lifetime. In 1865 he received minor clerical orders in the Catholic Church and became known as "Abbé Liszt."
