Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (1813–1901) is considered the most important Italian opera composer of the 19th century. Born in the village of Le Roncole near Busseto in the province of Parma, he showed exceptional musical talent from an early age. After being rejected by the Milan Conservatory, he studied under Vincenzo Lavigna and in 1833 was appointed conductor at the Philharmonic Society in Busseto. His operatic debut "Oberto" (1839) paved the way for the breakthrough with "Nabucco" (1842), whose chorus "Va, pensiero" became an anthem of the Italian unification movement (Risorgimento). Over the following decades, Verdi created works of world renown: "Rigoletto" (1851), "Il trovatore" (1853), "La traviata" (1853), "Aida" (1871), "Otello" (1887), and "Falstaff" (1893). His Requiem (1874) ranks among the greatest choral works of the Romantic era. Verdi collaborated closely with librettists such as Francesco Maria Piave and Arrigo Boito, drawing on dramas by Shakespeare, Schiller, and Hugo. He died on 27 January 1901 in Milan.
