Georg Friedrich Handel (1685–1759) is one of the most important composers of the Baroque era. Born in Halle (Saale), Germany, he trained under Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow and subsequently worked in Hamburg and Italy before settling permanently in London in 1712. In 1727 he became a naturalised British subject, anglicising his name to George Frideric Handel. His music blends the Middle German polyphonic choral tradition with Italian Baroque and English church music styles, and he played a defining role in shaping the English oratorio and the organ concerto as distinct genres. His most celebrated works include the oratorio Messiah (1741), Water Music (1717), and Music for the Royal Fireworks (1749). His Coronation Anthems were composed for the coronation of George II and continue to be performed at British coronations to this day. Handel is not a contemporary DJ or live performer on Mallorca stages — but his legacy endures in classical concert programmes worldwide.
