I Musici is the world's longest-running chamber music ensemble, founded in Rome in 1951 by twelve young graduates of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. The group gave its debut on 30 March 1952 at Santa Cecilia and has since performed in concert halls across every continent, from Europe and Japan to Australia and nearly every US state. Its defining feature is a deliberately conductorless structure: twelve musicians – six violins, two violas, two cellos, one double bass, and one harpsichord – reach unanimity on all interpretive questions as equals. I Musici is best known for its benchmark recordings of Baroque repertoire, above all Vivaldi's Four Seasons (the first stereo recording of the work) and music by Tomaso Albinoni. The ensemble was also a pioneer of the classical music video and the first group to record a compact disc for the Philips label. New releases now appear on Decca Classics, most recently a new recording of the Four Seasons. I Musici remains a regular guest at major international festivals and prestigious concert halls worldwide.
