J Álvarez, born Javid David Álvarez Fernández on December 13, 1983, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, is one of the most prominent voices in Latin reggaeton. His parents are both from the Dominican Republic. Already at age 12 he performed original songs in front of classmates, drawing inspiration from Tego Calderón and Busta Rhymes. A family connection led him to producer DJ Nelson, who signed him to Flow Music in 2009. That same year his debut mixtape *El Dueño Del Sistema* dropped, featuring De La Ghetto, Jowell & Randy, and Ñejo & Dalmata. His 2011 studio album *Otro Nivel de Música* broke him internationally: the single "La Pregunta" spent 49 weeks on Billboard's Hot Latin Rhythm Songs chart, peaking at No. 5, and the album received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Urban Music Album. *De Camino Pa' La Cima* (2014) debuted at No. 1 on the Latin Rhythm Albums chart and featured Daddy Yankee. His collaboration "El Amante" with Daddy Yankee surpassed 270 million YouTube views. *Big Yauran* (2016) earned another Latin Grammy nomination, while "Haters" went Platinum and "Rico Suave" went Gold (RIAA). With over 11 million monthly Spotify listeners and 22 million social media followers, J Álvarez remains a defining figure in urban Latino music.
